Fit Points: Straps

Sometimes we get so caught up in cup size and band size, we forget about the finer fit points that can determine if a bra is a good fit.

After noticing the Fantasie Rebecca straps and armholes were more comfortable than the Cleo Juna’s, I decided to compare the bras I currently own to figure out why.

Obviously, a more centered strap position is more comfortable to me. This is interesting since I have very wide shoulders, very wide breasts, and a very wide ribcage…so I would assume a wide strap would be compatible with my shape.

The wider straps give me less support (in the bras I own) compared to the Rebecca, and cause irritation on my pectoral muscle as well as my armpits. A lower wire height (Freya Deco) helps reduce this irritation; however, a low wire coupled the other features I require in a bra are scarce.

Additionally, the more centered straps tend to be found in full-coverage type bras, a style I have been avoiding since most I’ve tried have high wires (gore and underarms).

So, as I shop for bras I will definitely look for more centered straps, along with shorter band and underarm heights.
