Workout Bottoms for Big Hips

Today’s post in the Fit and Active September series is about finding workout bottoms for big hips – focusing on shorts, pants, and capris.

Full disclosure about how this post carries some bias: In addition to having wide hips, I have a long rise because I am a strange Figure 8/X Shape hybrid on the bottom half. I have a long, high hip with a low round curve and a very short waist. So, read this review with the understanding that these brands and styles fit me, and may not fit you if you don’t have a similar shape. Also, right now my waist is ~34 1/2″, and low hip ~45 1/2″; however, most waist bands hit me right above my high hip which is ~ 37″.

One of my main difficulties is finding bottoms that are long enough in the rise so I don’t flash crack when I bend over. Additionally, my low hip measurement is typically larger than the cuts in many pants, and the combination of the two constantly pulls my bottoms down while I’m in them. This is very inconvenient for workout bottoms...because I don’t want to come out of my pants while doing squats, right?

Luckily, workout bottoms for big hips are easier to find than pants and jeans, because athletic bottoms typically stretch. So here are my go-to brands to safely clothe big hips.

*****

Under Armour

Under Armour is my go-to brand for workout bottoms for big hips, as well as big busts and shoulders. Since they design their women’s sizes for hourglass figures of all sizes (that means they fit my bust, waist and hips) I feel quite safe exploring their plentiful offerings. Additionally, there is an Under Armour factory outlet in the Phoenix Premium Outlet center – close enough to hit the sale racks every few months.

During my last visit I tried on quite a few bottoms and was extremely pleased to find that in addition to fitting my hips, they also fit my long rise. To say I was ecstatic was an understatement! I usually fit into an XL in all Under Armour bottoms. Here are some of the bottoms I tried and purchased recently.

C9 by Champion from Target

Again, Target scores for workout bottoms for big hips and big chests and wide shoulders. I appreciate the stretch French terry short and bermuda for convenience, value, and because they fit my long rise. The Bermuda shorts are my favorite leg workout shorts since they keep me from showing too much crotch on the hip adduction/abduction machines as well as the leg press. I fit best into XL’s in C9.

Old Navy

Old Navy has increasingly added workout options over the past few years (or maybe I just noticed them?). I appreciate the convenience of Old Navy, the large selection, and their size range that starts at small and goes through xxlarge, in addition to regular and tall selections. I’ve had my yoga capris for quite a few years in a size L, and they’ve comfortably stretched to accommodate size fluctuations from a size 14 to 16 U.S. Again, I’m a huge fan because these yoga pants have a longer rise, though not as long as most Under Armour styles, and are great workout bottoms for big hips.
