Momgerie (otherwise known as sleepwear).

I used to sleep naked. Blissfully, comfortably naked before I became Mom.

Our son is now sleeps through the night, and 2 a.m. “MOM” screams from upstairs are rare, and usually illness induced.

Once in a while, I turn of my Mommy ears and sleep naked. Usually during the shoulder seasons when it’s not too hot or to cold to close and lock the bedroom door and sacrifice air circulation. It feels decadent, being naked and free and cocooned behind our locked door.

But in the morning I am Mom Who Makes Breakfast, and Mom Who Drags Him Out of Bed, and Mom Who Yells A Lot. And while my son has seen my naked body many times because he hasn’t learned to respect a closed door, I do prefer to wear clothes in the mornings. I find it difficult to carry off Mommy Duty naked, or in a see-through chiffon babydoll.

So, I need Momgerie (Mom lingerie). Specifically, lightweight opaque sleepwear that covers my bottom and boobs – pieces that don’t require a robe for modesty’s sake.

Momgerie verges on loungewear – the difference being Momgerie consists of pieces I wouldn’t wear out of the house because they’re obviously sleepwear, or replace with pajamas for sleeping comfort.  Momgerie isn’t lingerie – it’s that warm fuzzy middle ground that covers safe, but can include sexy. Lingerie implies transparent fabrics, seduction, tousled hair and long languid glances set to sexy jazz music, while I sip mimosas in the dappled morning sunshine and reminisce over what happened the night before. Momgerie is easy and functional, the niche where practical meets flattering – where a quick glance in the morning mirror allows me to ignore the bedhead and instead focus on the curve of my hip meeting my bustilne with a surprised and satisfied smile.

What I am talking about is the sturdier stuff that will armor me to drag a kid out of bed, protect my sensitive parts from flying breakfast grease, modest enough to wear while I reach out the kitchen door and punch the garage door opener in full view of the bus driver and neighbors, and forgiving enough to allow a sprawl across the couch as I balance coffee in one hand and my iPhone in the other while I check my schedule.

Yeah, Momgerie.

To illustrate the idea of Momgerie, I thought I’d highlight a line that consistently puts out Momgerie styles. I think DKNY does Momgerie (sleepwear) very well – lines range from safe to sexy in sizes S – 3X, though not all styles are available in plus sizes. The DKNY sleepwear line is available through several department stores – Dillard’s, Macy’s, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, as well as online lingerie stores like HerRoom and BareNecessities.

You can see some of my favorite Momgerie/Sleepwear styles by DKNY on my Momgerie Pinterest board (click here if you can’t see the board in your browser).
